TRUTH: Why engineers may not get a job

A Nascomm report estimates that 50,000 Engineers in India may not be employed this year. This would mean that 20-33 percent of graduates may not get a job.
Placements are being held across Engineering colleges. With a decrease in IT companies hiring, it means that thousands of graduates could remain unemployed. It is estimated that there are a 1.5 million Engineering graduates in India.
Students are looking at other branches of Engineering following a decrease in recruitments in IT and telecommunications.
Options such as Civil Engineering have gained popularity following a lackluster performance by telecommunications sector over the past two years. The IT sector is also reported to have a decline in recruitments.
An increase in the number of Engineering institutes and a decrease in the number of companies hiring is not good news for graduates.
The issues with the lack of hiring graduates are not new. Employers state that there is a skills gap between industry and education. Most Engineering graduates expect to work for IT and opt for this specialization.
With top tier Engineering institutes facing a tougher time placing students, many of the lesser known colleges may struggle.

10 Reasons Why You May Not Be Getting a Job Offer

If you’re not getting invited back, ask yourself “why?” Most of the time, the problem is with the way you are presenting yourself. That’s not surprising because job interviewing is an infrequent activity for most of us. You need to critique your interviewing presentation the same as you would your on-the-job-performance. Here are ten reasons why you may not be getting a job offer:

1. You’re not qualified. It’s true, you have nothing to lose by applying for every job that looks even remotely like it might be a match. On the other hand, if you overstate your qualifications, it will come out during the interview. Sometimes the interviewer doesn’t properly screen job candidates, and it’s not until the interview is well under way that it becomes obvious that the candidate lacks the necessary skills or experience. There’s not much you can do about interviewers who don’t do their homework. However, think twice before you set yourself up for failure by applying for jobs that are clearly outside your level of expertise.

2. You may lack enthusiasm. You don’t have to emulate Zig Ziglar or Richard Simmons, but you must express enthusiasm for a job if you don’t want to be weeded out early in the interview process. Not everyone is effervescent in his or her personality, but if you can’t manufacture enthusiasm during a job interview, a hiring manager has to wonder how good your attitude will be after you’re hired.

3. Failure to establish your worth to the prospective employer. When you give the impression that you are only interested in “what’s in it for me” without regard to what you have to offer, a job opportunity is often lost. The hiring manager wants to know what you can do for him or her. Candidates who fail to establish their worth are quickly eliminated. For example, if you have eight years of progressively responsible experience as an application engineer, you will want to make sure that the interviewer sees the value in your experience. You establish your worth by the specific things that you say in answer to his or her questions.

4. Unclear job goals eliminate many candidates from further consideration. If you10. are an electrical supervisor and you don’t know what you specifically want to do, are not sure if you want to supervise again, or can’t communicate your interest during the interview, you’re in trouble. If you’re going through some soul-searching as we all do on occasion, keep it out of the interview or you run the risk of losing a job opportunity. Employers are not interested in hiring people who don’t know what they want to do.

5. Bad mouthing previous employers. There is no faster way to be cut from further consideration than by saying something negative about your current or most recent employer. It may be that your former supervisor really was a technically weak boss. Maybe he or she was frequently late in following through on assignments that in turn impacted your work. Regardless of the situation, think twice before you talk about it. It’s better to put a positive spin on your job search, saying you’re looking for better opportunities when asked why you are making a change. Employers want to hire people who are going places, not those who are refugees. What you say tells the listener more about you than about the person/company you are talking about. As tempting as it may be to tell the interviewer how badly your previous employer treated you, keep your negative thoughts to yourself.

6. Poor personal appearance. The key here is that you must fit in with the way others in the company dress. Hiring managers don’t want to hire anyone for their team who would be a distraction to others. And keep in mind that if a manager hires you with a nose ring, his or her judgment will be called into question, regardless of how well you do your job. A poor personal appearance can eliminate you before you open your mouth.

7. Unprepared for the interview. Preparing includes practice answering interview questions as well as researching the company. Interviewers are always impressed when you know something about their company. If due to a lack of practice you stumble with your answers, it will be clear that you are unprepared. Be ready to answer the question: “What can you tell me about yourself” in two minutes or less. It’s obvious to the interviewer when a candidate hesitates to answer a question that he or she is not prepared.

8. You may lack interpersonal skills. On paper you may look great. On the phone you are impressive. Your references look fine at a glance, but face to face you fail the test. If there is any hint that you may not get along with other members of the engineering team, it’s a deal killer. Suppress your desire to say anything that would suggest that you’re weak in the area of interpersonal skills including a comment that you are shy or would rather work with machinery than people.

9. Revealing your weaknesses will usually end your chances for getting a job offer. The hiring manager’s number one job is to determine the candidate’s weaknesses. He or she will do this by asking tough interview questions that you must be prepared to answer without revealing your weaknesses. Practice answering the question: “Can you tell me about one of your weaknesses and what you are doing to improve?” Take it one step further and decide what you will say when the interviewer asks you for three weaknesses that you are working on.

10. Failure to sell yourself. Your responsibility during the interview is to sell yourself and that includes carefully tooting your own horn. You may not have had to do much of this in the past, but times have changed. And don’t forget to follow up with a telephone call three or four days after an interview. It’s a great way to reinforce your interest in the job as well as ask a question or two that you may have forgotten to ask.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why you may not be getting a job offer. These ten reasons are among the most likely. Regardless of the reason, it’s your responsibility to make sure that you avoiding anything that would prevent you from moving forward in the interview process and ultimately landing the job.

GBTU, MTU merges as UPTU by UP Government

Reverting Mayawati government's 2010 decision, the Samajwadi Party has formally merged Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) into Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), the notification against which was issued on October 31.
To better manage technical colleges in western UP, the erstwhile Mayawati government had set up MTU in Noida. The Act, which brought about the change, felt "that the bifurcation resulted in changing syllabi and assessment methods in the state, which has not been well received. The loss in repute of a well-established UPTU has affected the prospects for further education and employment of its graduates."
The Act further suggests that the "creation of the two universities, only for the purpose of affiliation, does not improve the standard of the technical education in the state."
Various academic bodies, which were holding office in GBTU, will now constitute the body of the UPTU. The merger also brings together 350 plus colleges under GBTU and more than 400 under MTU, having nearly 4 lakh students among them.
UPTU pro vice-chancellor Dr D S Yadav said the syllabi changes will be brought into place from the next academic session.
Yadav, who believes the merger will bring back UPTU's "old glory," said "the second- and third-year students will be taught according to the existing course". By - INDIA EXPRESS

Do you know what is Meditation? Learn Now

Meditation is a simple, effective and convenient way to calm your busy mind, relax your body, become grounded and find inner peace amidst the chaos of day-to-day life.
Food nourishes the body yet the mind drives it. The body does as the mind tells it. Without a filter, our senses are on overdrive and our mind becomes dominated by what is happening around us. Continuous stimulation from sight, smell, sound, taste and touch tends to result in a speedy mind and contributes to physical exhaustion. We need to create relaxing thoughts, as used in these one minute meditations, to consciously free the mind from the noise of the outer world. Thus, we are strengthened, the body relaxed and the senses cooled. My mind is quiet.
The Story of Two Wolves
A Grandfather from the Cherokee Nation was talking with his grandson. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves." "One wolf is evil and ugly: He is anger, envy, war, greed, self-pity, sorrow, regret, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, selfishness and arrogance." "The other wolf is beautiful and good: He is friendly, full of joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, justice, fairness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, gratitude, and deep vision." "This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other human as well." The grandson paused in deep reflection because of what his grandfather had just said. Then he finally cried out; "Oyee! Grandfather, which wolf will win?" The elder Cherokee replied, "The one I feed."
Thoughtful Choice
It’s important to choose which thoughts we give our time and attention to. A thought leads to a feeling, which leads to an awareness and that leads to our experience of life. When we tune into our true, natural self the experience of happiness bubbles up, having relaxed and freed ourselves from the noise of the outer world, we are ready to look into our inner world of thoughts and feelings and begin to nourish “the good wolf”. This works like magic! A mind well nourished becomes our friend.
Strengthening the mind
By focusing on our beautiful thoughts and feelings we develop natural concentration. Using the one minute meditations regularly strengthen this. It is then easy to keep an appreciative outlook, hold interest and use time successfully.
Train a wandering mind
What to do when the mind still wanders? We can step back and observe our own negative or unhelpful thoughts, as if they are clouds passing by, without getting caught up in them. Then we gently focus our mind on positive empowering thoughts. With practice our natural habit of concentrating on the positive returns and our mind wanders less.
Meditation is focusing our concentration and remembering deeply our eternal identity and re-awakening a wonderful state of well-being. It is the soul, I the soul, who is a tiny, subtle point of pure, living energy, spark like, that uses the body to express itself. We are seated in the pilot seat, behind the eyes, in the centre of the forehead – distinct from the brain. Experience the self in this way and emerge an incredible feeling of lightness.
Meditating on the self as a soul, we start to experience the power of true silence, which is sweet, peaceful, rich and powerful. It is the ‘language of the soul’, being able to feel supremely comfortable and stable. When we are touching the ‘heart’ of our selves we are light and vibrant...we are silent.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
·       Consistency is more important than quantity.  Meditating for 5 minutes every day will reward you with far greater benefits than meditating for two hours, one day a week.
·       During breathing engage your diaphragm and fill your lungs, but do not force your breath.
·       A mantra is a sound, word or phrase that can be repeated throughout your meditation.  Mantras can have spiritual, vibrational and transformative benefits, or they can simply provide a point of focus during meditation.  Here we use OM as a mantra.
·       During meditation don’t dwell on your thoughts.
·       When you are ready to end your practice, slowing bring your conscious attention back to your surroundings.  Acknowledge your presence in the space around you.  Gently wiggle your fingers and toes.  Begin to move your hands, feet, arms and legs.  Open your eyes.  Move slowly and take your time getting up.
·       While relaxing body don’t forget to relax each part of body.
·       As far as possible, the back, the neck and the head should be in a straight line.
·       At the end, By GOD’S grace, our period of silence is over. And now let us rub the palms of our hands together and gently, very gently, softly, very softly, touch them on the eyes and open them. “OM, BRAHMA KIRPA HEE KEWALAM, KRISHNA KIRPA HEE KEWALAM, GURU KIRPA HEE KEWALAM, OM SHANTI, SHANTI, SHANTI”
MEDITATION STEPS:
1.    Be still, silent, Relax your body, Rhythmic breathing. Breathe in slowly, easily, evenly, and deeply and then breathe out slowly, easily, evenly, and deeply. As your breathing becomes rhythmic, your tensions will relax. It may be better if you blend the repetition of “OM” with your breathing. As you inhale, take in the breath, utter the sacred syllable “OM” silently. Then exhale, take out the breath and as you do so, utter the sacred syllable “OM” orally i.e. with sound.
2.    Just watch the mind. Observe the mind without any judgment, without any criticism. You are but a silent observer; observe without judgment, without criticism. You will find that as you detach yourself from the mind and just keep on watching it, its movements, gradually the mind will cease its activities.
3.    The third step is the step of serenity, the step of peace. In this third step, you may imagine yourself as a rock in the midst of an ocean. Waves arise. They dash against the rock. The rock is unaffected, is calm, tranquil, peaceful, serene. Waves arise. Waves are the distracting thoughts. They dash against the rock. The rock is unaffected, calm, tranquil, peaceful and serene.
4.    It is the step where you realize your oneness with all that is, all men, all creatures, all things, all conditions. You are in every unit of life, in every bird and animal, in every foul & fish, in every insect, in every shrub, in every plant. You belong to all countries and communities, all races and religions. You are at one with the universe. This type of meditation will fill your heart with loving kindness & a spirit of compassion so that a stage may come when you will not wish to snuff out the life even of the smallest insect.
5.    In the fifth step you must realize that you are immortal. If you are at one with all humanity, then even if there is one human being alive, you are alive. If you are at one with all living creatures, then even if there is but one creature breathing the breath of life, you are alive. Yes, you are immortal, immutable, eternal, and deathless!
6.    In this step you breathe out peace and happiness, goodwill and bliss to all. May all be happy and full of peace and bliss. Think of all who dwell in the Northern lands and pray in the heart within: “may all who dwell in the Northern lands be happy and full of peace and bliss.” Then think of all who dwell in the Southern lands and offer the prayer “may all who dwell in the Southern lands be happy and full of peace and bliss.” Likewise, “may all who dwell in Eastern lands and all who dwell in Western lands, may they all be happy and full of peace and bliss.” Breathe out peace and goodwill to all. May all be happy and full of peace and bliss. All living things whether they be near or far, tall or tiny, rich or poor, educated or illiterate, whether they be born or are still in the womb unborn, may all, all, all be happy and full of peace and bliss. May those that love and those that for some reason or the other are unable to love you, may those that speak well of you, and those that for some reason or the other are unable to speak well of you, may all, all, all, without exception, be happy and full of peace and bliss. You are in them all. It is only when they become happy that you are happy. May all be free from disease, ignorance, sorrow. As you get up from this meditation, you will find that you yourself are happy and full of peace and bliss.
